Debbera Ransom, Founding Commander, AMVETS Post No. 24
Debbera M. Ransom is a lifelong Buffalo, New York native whose life’s work reflects service, leadership, and cultural preservation. At the age of 23, following the Vietnam War, she entered the United States Army as a Military Police Woman, serving both stateside and overseas before receiving an Honorable Discharge. Her military service laid the foundation for a lifetime of advocacy and leadership on behalf of veterans and her community.
Ms. Ransom is the Founding Commander of Johnetta R. Cole AMVETS Post No. 24, chartered on March 1, 2012, and continues to be a trailblazer in veteran leadership. She is also the Founder, Lead Organizer, and Incorporator of the African American Veterans Arts and Culture Corporation, an organization dedicated to honoring the bravery and sacrifice of African American military men and women. Through innovative displays, articles, presentations, parades, festivals, tours, and films, her vision educates the public while preserving an often-overlooked legacy of service.
A graduate of Buffalo State College, Ms. Ransom earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, further strengthening her commitment to education and community empowerment. She has also served as the former on-site provider for Kids Time Group Family Day Care, supporting families and youth with care and compassion.
Adding to her extraordinary and diverse life experience, Ms. Ransom is a former International Professional Lady Wrestler, famously known as “Sheena the VooDoo Queen from Deep Dark Africa.” Her bold presence and pioneering spirit in athletics mirrored the strength and resilience she has carried into every arena of her life.
Since leaving the military, Ms. Ransom has been recognized on both local and national levels for her seamless and sustained volunteer service. She continues to serve in leadership roles by organizing and presenting educational exhibits, developing community programs, and providing critical information on veteran benefits.
Her distinguished service has earned her induction into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame. She has also marched in the Presidential Inauguration Parade representing New York State for President Barack Obama, served as Grand Marshal for Veterans Day
and Juneteenth Parades, and contributed her leadership on several parade committees.
Through vision, perseverance, and unwavering dedication, Debbera M. Ransom remains a powerful force in honoring veterans, uplifting community history, and inspiring future generations.
