Jerome R. Wright, Criminal Justice Advocate
Introduction
Jerome R. Wright stands as a distinguished human rights activist and a devoted advocate for criminal justice reform. In his current roles, he serves as the Co-Director of both the HALT Solitary Campaign and the NYS Jails Justice Network. Through these leadership positions, Jerome works tirelessly to challenge and dismantle practices such as solitary confinement and to promote more humane conditions within the criminal justice system.
Additionally, Jerome is the founder and co-creator of the MAN (Mentoring And Nurturing) Program, which exemplifies his commitment to guiding and supporting others, particularly those impacted by incarceration. His dedication extends into media and education as well; Jerome hosts the Wright Report, an edutainment podcast for the community on Think Twice Radio, where he brings awareness and insight to issues affecting individuals and families affected by the justice system.
Jerome also contributes as a consultant for the University at Buffalo's Law School Criminal Law Clinics, offering his experience and perspective to inform and enhance legal education. His multifaceted involvement underscores his unwavering commitment to advocacy, education, and systemic change.
A Mosaic Life: The Journey of Jerome R. Wright
The term "mosaic" aptly describes Jerome’s life, reflecting a journey marked by diverse and profound experiences. As a young man, Jerome excelled both academically and athletically, achieving notable success such as his victory over Carl Lewis at the Woodbury Relays in 1978. Despite this promising start, his path took a dramatic turn, leading eventually to involvement in violent crimes, including, but not limited to, murder.
Trials and Transformation
Jerome's life underwent a profound transformation during the more than thirty years he spent incarcerated, much of it in solitary confinement. Rather than succumbing to adversity, he channeled his experiences into meaningful change. While still incarcerated, Jerome initiated the MAN mentoring program, demonstrating his commitment to supporting and guiding others. He also won a significant legal battle against DOCCS (Santiago v. Miles, F. Supp.) for racial discrimination. Jerome’s pursuit of justice nearly cost him his life when he was brutally attacked by guards in retaliation for his testimony in Federal Court in Rochester, NY—a harrowing experience reminiscent of the Robert Brooks case.
Redemption and Advocacy
After facing more than six parole denials, Jerome was finally granted release in 2009. Since his release, his life has been dedicated to redemptive work. He has contributed in numerous roles, including youth counselor, programs coordinator, reentry specialist (with a focus on housing, treatment, counseling, employment training, and mentoring), teacher/preceptor, mentor, activist/advocate, and restorative justice facilitator. Jerome’s efforts have played a significant role in the passage of local, county, and state laws aimed at ending solitary confinement, combating mass incarceration and racial discrimination, addressing abuse, and fighting disenfranchisement. He also serves as a Deacon, ministering alongside his son Justin within their church community.
Personal Tragedy and Resilience
Jerome’s personal journey has been marked by deep tragedy. He has been a victim of violent crime himself, enduring the devastating loss of his firstborn son, Jayjay, to murder and the attempted murder and shooting of his second son, Kacene. Despite these painful experiences, Jerome has continued to persevere and has raised his youngest son, Justin—who was born with Down’s Syndrome. Now at age 30, Justin has become a certified statewide advocate for disability rights, following in his father’s footsteps.
Family and Legacy
For Jerome, his greatest accomplishment is his enduring relationship and marriage of over forty years to his wife, Susan. Together, they have raised three sons and their only daughter, Denetra. Denetra has achieved professional success as an attorney and serves as the Vice President of Jack and Jill, in addition to being the mother of two of Jerome’s nearly twenty grandchildren, Eva and Zora. Jerome’s unwavering commitment to advocacy and justice is rooted in his deep desire to secure a brighter future for his grandchildren and the generations that will follow.
